The Great Prayers from the Bible

2020 Lenten Series

An Exposition on The Lord’s Prayer by Cyprian (200 - 258 AD)

Among our Lord’s other saving guidance and divine instructions by which he counselled his people in the way of salvation, Jesus himself gave the form by which to pray (i.e. The Lord’s Prayer). He who brought us to life taught us also to pray.

Remember, Jesus prayed frequently and showed us that we ought to do so by his example. If he who was without sin prayed, how much the more should a sinner pray, and if he kept continual vigil and prayed with unceasing prayer how much the more should we keep watch with constant prayer.

Praying the Lord's Prayer (#6)

"The Lord's Prayer stands at the heart of the Christian spiritual life. This prayer is a prayer for pilgrims traveling on their way through the wilderness of this life as they move toward the eternal promised land.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us form evil. Amen.

A Prayer for God's Glory (#5)

"Christ will come again!" The return of Christ to the earth is the setting for this prayer from 2 Thess. 1: 11-12. How shall we prepare for His glorious appearing? This prayer provides the keys.

To this end, I pray for you, asking that you will make them worthy of the call and will fulfill, by your power, every right resolve and work of faith, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in them and them in God, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

A Prayer for God's Blessings (#4)

Israel's priesthood first offered this week's Lenten prayer for the people of God. We, as a new royal Priesthood, are invited to utter these same words of blessing for one another.

"O Lord, bless us and keep us;

O Lord, make your face to shine upon us and be gracious to us;

O Lord, lift up your countenance upon us and give us peace. Amen."

A Prayer for Protection (#3)

This week's Lenten prayer is Jesus' own prayer found in the Gospel of John 17.  It centers on the unity of the Church as the means by which the gospel will reach the world.

"O Father, my prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that yo protect them from the Evil One. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. I pray we all may be one that the world will know that you, Father, sent me ."
